    Helping you build your family

If you wish to adopt a child, then the application must be made through your Local Authority Children’s Services. The process can take six months as several assessments need to be done. A social worker will be allocated to you but at every stage, we are here to help and guide you to ensure that you meet the requirements.

If you would like to talk to a member of our team, then please contact us for a free consultation

    Specialist family law accreditations

We’re here to help you through the legal parts of the adoption process. We have individuals on our team of our team who have earned The Law Society’s Family Law accreditation. This means they have shown a high level of competence and extensive knowledge in family law matters. Some of our solicitors also hold The Law Society’s Children Law accreditation, so they have the ability to work directly with children and understand their needs and wishes.

    Your questions answered about adoption

    • Who can apply to adopt a child?

You must meet the criteria required by UK adoption agencies.

      • you must be over the age of 21
      • There is no upper age limit to adopt
      • Whatever ethnic background you are from, you can still adopt
      • Being on a low income or benefits should not stop you from adopting
      • You need to have been living in the British Isles for at least a year to apply to adopt
      • If you have a criminal record this would be carefully looked into but, apart from some offences against children, it won’t necessarily rule you out.
    • Can I adopt a child if I live with a disability?

Having a disability is not a barrier to adoption, provided you can care for the child. All applicants, regardless of whether or not they live with a disability, must go through a ‘panel’ where experts ask you questions about your life – including how you’ll deal with potential issues arising from your daily life.

    • Can I adopt even if I already have children?

You can adopt even if you already have children, whether adopted, biological or step children. You can adopt more than one child at a time, some children have siblings also waiting to be adopted

    • Do I need to own my own home to adopt a child?

You don’t have to own your own home – you just need the space and security to care for a child as they grow up you will be considered.

    • Can I adopt if I'm single or not married to my partner?

Absolutely – in fact, many adoption agencies are encouraging more single people to adopt. You can adopt if you are an unmarried couple. This goes for all sexualities and gender expressions.
